Sophie (Amanda Seyfried) is a young American girl who travels to the city of Verona, home of the Shakespearian star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet, to join a group of volunteers who respond to letters to Juliet seeking advice about love. She soon finds herself inspired by the author of one letter, Claire (Vanessa Redgrave) who travels to Italy in search of her long-lost love, setting off a chain of events that will bring a love into both their lives unlike anything they could have ever imagined.
