Set in 1954 U.S. Marshal Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) and his partner Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) travel to Massachusetts island to investigate the disappearance of a patient from a facility for the criminally insane. Only to be met by a web of lies, riots, despair and strange goings on as the pair become trapped on the strange island.
